Instructions
- Take a photo of the map. Keep north at the top of the page. If your camera app has a scan capability, that can make a straight, well-framed image easier.
- Download your route file. GPX, FIT, or TCX files are commonly available from your route or activity; choose GPX for this tool. With Garmin, use connect.garmin.com in a web browser, open the activity, click the cog, and choose Export to GPX.
- Choose the files here. On the Route overlay tab, load your route file and your map photo.
- Set the alignment. Click Add Matching Point, tap a recognizable point on the route diagram, then tap the same physical point on the map photo. Repeat with at least two points; three or four points spread around the map usually give a better fit. Confirm each pair after adjusting either marker if needed. Then use the rotate, scale, and nudge sliders for final accuracy. Direct dragging is available as an optional fine adjustment.
- Download the image. When you are happy with the alignment, click Download image. The result uses the map photo filename with -route added before the extension.
Why use this tool?
This project was started to
- Provide new or young orienteers, who may not feel comfortable publicly sharing what they did, with a private way to put their route on a map and learn from it.
- Allow users to review their navigation choices and learn from their experiences:
- without needing to share their activities online.
- while waiting for the event to be unlocked for sharing routes on other platforms.
Everything happens in your browser. Your route and map photo stay on your device, so you can review your choices and understand your navigation without having to share the activity online.
